What if I told you that the best way to keep your business from failing has nothing to do with your business?

You’d probably be a little surprised, right? What is this method? How does it work?

But what if I went a step further and said, “If you follow this method, not only will it help keep your business from failing, it will bring you and your romantic partner closer together and deepen your bond.”

That sounds perfect, you think. Maybe even a little too perfect.

“And,” I continue, “you can even harness this method to live more authentically, more fulfillingly, and more harmoniously with your whole family.”

It’s not snake oil. It’s just a set of tools and a way of thinking.

Let me put it to you this way: You’ve got this drawer in your house with broken pens, the odd paperclip, and the bits and bobs that don’t have anywhere else to go. You might see a junk drawer. Secret agent Angus McGyver sees the components for a flamethrower.

You’ve been conditioned to think a certain way that makes you see some issues as insoluble. You can’t have it all, as the saying goes. And I’m not arguing that you can have it all. But I am arguing that you can have more than you thought possible, if you put your focus on the issue.

I know, because you are a micro-entrepreneur, that you have the capacity to see solutions where other people see only obstacles. And I’m convinced you already have all the tools you need to find the solution to the concerns that currently seem at odds. I’m just going to show you how to use them.

Let me tell you about it.

Living the Dream: Version 1.0

Starting a micro-business, while satisfying and challenging, is a tough row to hoe. Sometimes it can feel like you’re being pulled in a dozen different directions.

You know it’s just an expression, but sometimes you feel like you really are being torn apart.

Tell me if this kind of thing sounds familiar:

Your mom needs to be driven to her doctor’s appointment. Your son wants you to chaperone his field trip. A client wants to know if she can reschedule. You need to hire help for your business, but where are you going to get the money? You’ve already cut your retirement savings to the bare bones. When you go grocery shopping, you throw a few extra frozen meals into the cart, even though you’ll wince when it gets rung up. Sometimes it’s just too much effort to cook. Don’t you deserve a little downtime? You can’t remember the last time you and your spouse had some alone time that didn’t involve making a game plan for the upcoming week.

Welcome to a day in the life of an average micro-business owner.

Oh, sure, we’d like to be footloose and fancy-free like those passive income-generating, location-independent online entrepreneurs, who work a few hours a week from their laptops at an internet cafe in Bangkok. (I like to fantasize about it, at least.) But the number of people who actually live like that? Very tiny.

Reading about those people is kind of fun. But, we have mortgages, the kids have school, and when it comes right down to it, we kind of like being rooted to a community. Starting a business gives us a certain amount of freedom, yes, but it also gives us a lot more responsibility– as if we didn’t already have enough on our plates as it is.

Nevertheless, we have hopes and dreams. Sometimes those dreams are mundane; like having a few thousand dollars in the checking account at all times. Sometimes those dreams are so big and seem so far away, they’re rarely mentioned; like having a little farm in the Smoky Mountains.

“Someday”, we think. “When the business has grown.”

Why Standard Advice Doesn’t Work for You
(But Neither Does “How to Work On a Beach”)

Even though the mainstream implies that you’re totally radical for starting a business, you’re also divided from the “4-Hour Workweek” types. That’s because, other than your eccentricity of wanting to be your own boss, you’re pretty much average in a number of ways.

You’re a rare breed, or at least, that’s the impression you’d get if you were looking for advice targeted to people like us. You’re not looking for a “get rich quick” scheme or a “3 Simple Steps to save $10,000” sort of guide. You know they’re mostly bullshit, and you’re too busy for that.

But you know what’s awesome about this state of affairs? Unlike the people with shopping addictions and latte habits that all the mainstream media likes to target, YOU have many of the habits and values in place that make you uniquely suited to get exactly what you want out of life.

If only someone would gather it all together in one neat, succinct little package and present it in an actionable manner, you could be kicking ass and taking names even more than you already are.

And that’s the whole premise behind Crash Course in Money Management.

It’s not just a book on money, because I am not just about the money. And neither are you. I am about helping you get your business running efficiently and effectively in alignment with your goals and principles. You want the same thing, and ideally, you want your whole life running at least as well as that.

What Topics Does Crash Course in Money Management Cover?

It would almost be easier for me to tell you what this guide doesn’t cover. It’s meant to be wide-ranging. But here’s what one reader had to say:

Sharise Mershon
“I had a decent understanding of money management before going through this course, but I’ve learned a lot from Shanna already and was curious about what she had to say on this topic.

Crash Course In Money Management was full of helpful information and resources! Shanna goes over everything from money philosophies and why we buy things, buying new vs used, and purchasing quality items, to your credit score (and what affects it), debt, budgeting, managing your household like a business, and whether or not both parents should work, to hacking expenses, groceries, and schooling, and investing your down time wisely. I definitely learned some new things and I’m pretty sure you will too. Even people who are fairly financially savvy already might learn a few new things!

This is much more than just a crash course in money management. I think Shanna covers pretty much everything you need to know to start managing your money and improving your financial situation, and then some! I know she’s far too modest to call this The Ultimate Overview Of How To Improve Your Financial Situation, but really, that’s kind of what this is. You could spend years learning this information in bits and pieces from a bunch of different sources and attempting to apply it. Or you could get Crash Course In Money Management and get it all presented in an organized, easy to understand way, in a guide that you can return to again and again, along with worksheets and recommendations and some information that you may not come across anywhere else.”

Money management isn’t rocket science. The primary difficulty with it is that it permeates almost every aspect of our lives, whether we want it to or not. And when you don’t have enough of it, money’s importance to you balloons. It’s only when you have enough of it that you can keep it from dominating your thoughts and actions.

We would all like to be in the position where money isn’t that important to us. Where its just one tool among many that are available to use. A life where we can concentrate on… what now?

Yes, that’s the crucial question here. What would you do if money weren’t a concern?

What’s missing from most personal finance manuals?

Without that end goal in mind, you will not be able to make effective use of your resources. Whether those resources are money, time, or focus, without that end goal, you’re in a boat without a rudder. It’s not enough to just want to be financially secure. You will need to know what you’re going to do when you’re financially secure. That’s because financial security will look very different depending on what’s most important to you.

So in Crash Course in Money Management we spend a lot of time exploring and defining this overarching dream.

Without that vision, people don’t make the hard decisions because they just feel like sacrifices or deprivation. With a powerful vision in place, sacrifices don’t feel like deprivation anymore. They feel like investing in yourself.

Here’s how Abigail tells it:

Crash Course in Money Management is a financial life raft and swimming lessons for micro-businesses. I went into it intimidated as hell – money makes me anxious- but Shanna’s writing style and confidence made it a delicious and reassuring read. Crash Course in Money Management made the actions I had to take and the choices I had to make seem realistic and doable. I felt like I could do this; yeah, it would still take work, but I was left with the sense that if I did all of the work, it would be worth it in the end. The worksheets helped me tremendously; they are the map to the shore that goes with the life raft and swimming lessons, and make it possible for you to figure out exactly how YOU can to get from point A to point B. Not Average Joe down the street, but YOU. Me. Us. Whatever our situation is, wherever in the ocean we’ve been dropped off; it helps us get to financial solid ground, and STAY there.

It totally wouldn’t be going too far to say that this guide is “hope in a box”. Every small business person who has ever looked at their numbers and wanted to shove it in a box and never look at it again should read this. I had all the basic ingredients for making the best use of my resources when I started, but Shanna showed me how to put them together into a coherent strategy. It’s like having the ingredients for a recipe and recipe, but not knowing why you can’t get it to work. This is Shanna explaining how it all works.

The best part about Crash Course in Money Management was how useful and validating it is. It was wonderful to have my own financial goals validated, to hear that I’m not weird, and that other people have the same money goals I do. (But that it’s okay that not everyone does, it’s about what is going to work for each of us.) It was great to hear that you can find your own personal balance between the things you give up and the things you keep; too many of these kinds of books say you should give up the things that matter to you, to have things that don’t matter to you.

Crash Course in Money Management isn’t a prescription, or a recipe. But it showed me how to use the mindset and instincts I’d already developed by running my own business and apply it to other aspects of my life. That was a huge relief because it helped me realize I was definitely “doing business” right, and encouraged me to use that expertise to make my family as successful as my business. This is a brilliant resource; why hadn’t someone thought to put it down like this before? It’s THAT good.
